How the Right Bed Helps Students Reduce Stress and Get Enough Sleep

The research conducted in 2009 studied 59 individuals who slept for 28 nights on their regular mattresses and then another 28 nights on new, medium-firm mattresses. After that, they had to evaluate their stress levels based on different factors such as worrying, nervousness, racing thoughts, irritability, headaches, and so on. The results of the study were quite surprising, it revealed that the new bed caused a notable decrease in stress. As you see, the right bed is beneficial for your psychological well-being.

The latest studies


To find out whether a bed really influences stress levels, let’s consider the research mentioned above in more detail. The study funded by the Better Sleep Council examined the sleep of 30 women and 29 men who owned innerspring mattresses that were 9.5 years old on average. Participants slept in their own beds for the first 28 days. Each morning, they rated their sleep quality. After that, they were given new bed sets of the same size as the original beds, and another 28–day period started. It’s important to note that participants kept sleeping in their own bedrooms and using their own linen because this was supposed to provide a natural environment during both experiment phases.

To assess the individuals’ perception of sleep quality, researchers asked them to complete analog scales every morning. What’s more, experts measured stress levels at the end of each phase using a questionnaire of 32 stress-related questions concerning such physical symptoms as trembling, cold hands, grinding teeth, dry mouth, tightness in the chest, and so on. Also, there were questions about psychological and perceptual feelings, for instance, forgetfulness, irritability, mind going blank, tension, and nervousness.

Research analysis has revealed that sleep quality consistently improved by 55% over the second phase. What’s more, stress levels reduced significantly on both physical and psychological levels. After the participants had been told that they could keep the new beds, all of them decided to do so.

Another study “Back Pain, Sleep Quality and Perceived Stress Following Introduction of New Bedding Systems” published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine also demonstrates that people sleep better and experience fewer stress symptoms when using comfortable beds.
